5 Restaurants You Must Try in New Orleans

New Orleans is arguably the most unique city in the United States. It’s a blend of cultures from all over the world historically speaking. The influence of Africa, France, Spain, and Italy is present in both architecture and cuisine. This article will speak about five places you should visit if in New Orleans. Everyone knows about the famed beignets from Café du Monde. As such, we’ll list it out of respect — though focus on some other establishments.

Commander’s Palace

Commander’s Palace has been a fixture within the city of New Orleans dating back to 1893. More of a fine dining establishment, the gentlemen visiting here must wear a collared shirt with closed shoes. When eating here, you’re transported back 100 years to a time when customer service was at an absolute premium. The location is in the beautiful Garden District, and it’s situated in a tremendously gorgeous Victorian home. The shrimp and grits are phenomenal, as are all of the dessert options. Though to be fair, anything you order here will be an experience worth waiting for — particularly if you’re not from the area and are visiting as a tourist.

Cochon

Along with its butcher shop next door, Cochon offers a modern take on Cajun cuisine. You’ll see all of the classic dishes from the region here — though slightly altered in a transcendent way. Chili-dusted cracklins’ with syrup are a nice way to start the meal. The same can be said for the fried boudin or the alligator with chili garlic mayo (don’t be scared to try this!). In terms of the main course, the rabbit and dumplings are delicious. The macaroni and cheese casserole is equally as appetizing.

Bearcat CBD

Bearcat CBD is situated in the Business District. The writer of this article might be biased a bit, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a better brunch spot anywhere in the city. The portions are very generous in correspondence with the accompanying prices. There’s a nice mix of hearty options along with vegan fare for those not able to partake in pork, chicken, or beef. The homemade biscuits are phenomenal, as are any of the crab-based dishes (there are a lot of them) and the pancakes. The pulled brisket with eggs and other sides is another show-stopper here.

Jewel of the South

A stone’s throw from Bourbon Street is Jewel of the South. This establishment is an elevated experience — from the cuisine to the cocktails. It features a very quaint and pretty courtyard outdoor area. Inside, an elegant bar stands out within the professional dining room. This is a great spot for a date or an intimate dinner with close friends. It’s far enough away from the craziness a few streets over, and it almost feels as if you’re in a completely different area completely. It’s also a perfect pre-dinner spot for a quick drink before bouncing elsewhere.

Domilise Po-Boys & Bar

Domilise’s is located in the Uptown neighborhood. This is a no-frills spot, and walking inside transports you back to a time decades prior. What the restaurant might lack in modernity it certainly makes up for in the quality of its food — not to mention the kindness of those working there. As it says in the name, grabbing a Po-Boy should be the top priority here. Domilise’s also has an excellent roast beef sandwich. Pro tip: Enjoy both the beef and seafood by ordering a Surf & Turf sandwich. Add on some fried potatoes and a drink on the side, and you’ll be in heaven. To put it into perspective. Domilise’s has been a staple within the city dating back to 1918.
