One of my favorite seasons is Autumn, and there’s nothing I love more than visiting a town and really enjoy the autumn atmosphere. If you love this season as much as we do, then here are some of the 5 best cities you might really enjoy during this time!
5. Bar Harbor, Maine
This idyllic city is one of the greatest in the country, not just Maine. The proximity to Acadia National Park alone makes it an incredible place, but it is also one of the most stunning areas to experience fall foliage from early September to late October. During this time, also consider camping inside the actual Acadia National Park, as it is one of the most beautiful national parks in the world. Outside of that, Bar Harbor is nothing but pure Maine bliss: a small coastal town with incredible atmosphere during the autumn time.
4. Kyoto, Japan
Kyoto is in season from mid-November to early December. Around this time, you will be able to see the city’s temples and gardens that become transformed by the hue of the Japanese maple trees (momiji), turning and orange-ish red. While the peak season can vary, November is generally considered the best time to go. Visit the Kiyomizu-dera temple, one of Kyoto’s famous (and there are many of them). They will give you panoramic views of the city which will undoubtedly be extra enchanting in the autumn.
3. Edinburgh, Scotland
The Gothic architecture is perfectly juxtapositioned by the beautiful autumn glow in this Scottish city. Autumn is the perfect time to come, as the crowds from the summer rush have dwindled. Be sure to visit the Old Town, a historic area with winding alleys that feel especially cozy in autumn. Visit the many cafes in town, and even the one where JK Rowling wrote a book you may have heard of named Harry Potter in the Elephant House. We would also recommend the Royal Botanic Garden or Holyrood Park for a brisk, relaxing picnic.
2. Paris, France
Amongst all the cities on this list, Paris in the autumn time is perhaps the most essential. The milder weather and less dense crowds make the Parisian walks all the better. During this time of year, many theaters and concert halls are hosting major performances. Try the Opera Garnier or Theatre des Champs-Elysees, and then afterwards get a hot chocolate at the famous Carette cafe. Of course, we would be remiss to not mention the Notre-Dame Cathedral or Louvre amidst the backdrop of fall.
1. Stowe, Vermont
Much of Vermont is fantastic in the fall, but Stowe in particular is surrounded by dense forests which turn a distinct shade of reddish-yellow during the autumn time. Thus, you will be offered the sight of some of the best foliage in Vermont (and perhaps the world). The drives alone will take your breath away. Smugglers’ Notch Pass in particular is a great drive to take in the fall, which winds through mountain passes and gives fantastic foliagle views on either side of the road. While visiting the quaint village, visit the Stowe Historical Society Musuem, not to mention many shops and boutiques nearby.
