Affordable airline Avelo is adding more routes to its growing base in Connecticut. The airline will now be offering routes to Louis Armstrong International Airport in New Orleans, for as low as $79. The airline will be a nonstop route from New Orleans to New Haven, Connecticut, with a start date of November 14th.
According to Avelo’s CEO Andrew Levy, he stated “Avelo is proud to be Connecticut’s airline and continue growth in New Haven with a new route to New Orleans, plus more Puerto Rico flights this winter and increased customer capacity,” according to an interview with T+L.
“With 27 nonstop destinations to choose from at Tweed, it’s easier than ever for travelers to experience our convenient, affordable, and reliable air service.”
Similarly, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker told Avelo Airlines that they are welcoming them with open arms, stating New Haven is an “exceptionally important, new destination”.
New Orleans and New Haven aren’t the only two destinations standing to benefit from this expansion. Due to increased popularity, they will now also offer twice-weekly service to Puerto Rico — four flights per week.
Avelo is a newer airline formed in 2021, attempting to carve out its own space in the low-cost airline industry. It was founded by Andrew Levy, formerly of Allegiant Air and United Airlines. One key aspect of their business strategy is to target airports that are underutilized by typical mainstream carriers, thus being able to keep ticket costs lower. Additionally, they use a streamlined pricing process, making ticket fees straightforward. Their base in New Haven, Connecticut gives them the ability to target a relatively larger population looking to utilize more travel routes, approximately serving a population of 2.4 million (and growing). They often offer promotions for fares as low
Avelo, who operates a fleet of Boeing 737s, isn’t the only newer airline entering the industry. Breeze, another airline start-up, is now offering routes to New Haven, igniting nothing short of an airline turf war. So the announcement of an expansion could come timely for Avelo who looks to set itself apart.
