Places to Check out in the Greater Portland Area

Nestled up in the Pacific Northwest is the city of Portland, Oregon. This hamlet offers plenty for travelers seeking great food, iconic scenery, and a bit of funk. It’s an offbeat place — and one with a quirky feel. Don’t let that dissuade you from coming. The charm emanating from Portland is quite prominent once setting foot here. This piece in particular will break down some fun activities to enjoy in the place many call Rip City.

Alphabet District

Also called Nob Hill, this quaint block of streets is perfect for shopping. There are a plethora of mom-and-pop stores chockfull of antiques, collectibles, clothes, and candles (among other things). If you’re hungry, the area provides you with plenty of good food choices. Fireside is a nice option for those in search of a gastropub. Blue Star Donuts is also located over here. The author suggests coming here rather than waiting in line for an hour to eat mediocre donuts from the more popular Voodoo Doughnut.

Next to the Alphabet District in the trendy Pearl District, enjoy terrific Italian cuisine from Piazza Italia. You’d be well-versed to take a lovely stroll down NW 23rd Avenue. You’ll find everything you’re looking for, and it’s particularly stunning during the fall months with the changing color of leaves.

Multnomah Falls

Roughly a half hour outside of the city sits Multnomah Falls. This is the largest waterfall in the state, and the views are Instagram/TikTok-worthy for kids, adults, and parents alike. Some trails can lead you through wooded areas onto a bridge with an even better view of the waterfall. Sitting right next door is a cozy lodge where you can grab a quick lunch before being dumbstruck by the natural beauty of the area. This is also a hiker’s paradise for those inclined to traverse through the terrain. If you take a quick drive through neighboring Corbett to Horsetail Falls, you’ll see even more waterfalls within the lush scenery. Along the way, locals will sell natural items in front of their homes. Many of the products are rooted in lavender and honey.

Food Truck Scene

The food scene in Portland is quite good. Talented chefs from all over the world either live here or have spent a spell here crafting their latest creations. The city itself has a vibrant food truck scene. Many of them will be clumped next to one another — making the “Where should we go for lunch?” decision far easier. You will enjoy some very good food here. Do some quick research online, and map out where these trucks will be located within the city.

Bible Club

This specific location is more so for couples who want to get away from children, or for a group of friends in search of a legit libation. Bible Club aims to transport its customers to the prohibition era. It’s a hidden speakeasy in the Southeast part of Portland. Making it more special is the location itself. It’s in an unassuming residential area, and the establishment is a bungalow transformed into something from nearly a century ago. It’s very cool — and the drinks are spectacular. This is one of those secret places you can impress your friends with. You will be astonished at the aged opulence when walking inside. There’s no sign outside of the house, so make sure you have the right address before knocking on the door!

Newberg

Depending on traffic, it may take you roughly 45 minutes to get to this small city outside of Portland. With that said, it’s well worth the trip. Newberg is situated in the Willamette Valley — home to hundreds of wineries and tasting spots. Newberg offers all of the modern conveniences you could want. Home development is currently exploding in the area. Yet, it’s also country in nature. The slower pace of life appeals to many here, and it’s not difficult to understand the appeal considering how picturesque the surroundings are.

Gusto Gastronomica Italiana is a relatively new spot within the area. In addition to being an Italian market full of imported goodies, it also boasts delicious paninis. You’d do well to have lunch here. Parrett Mountain Cellars includes a tremendous wine selection. The establishment is hidden up a forested road. Upon getting there, you’re truly in awe of the views from the back terrace.

Lastly, if you’re looking for a wonderful place to stay, check out Vineyard View Inn. Aside from being the top-ranked Bed and Breakfast experience in the area, you will be treated to A+ customer service from proprietor Jerry Wanke. Wanke makes sure every customer has as good of an experience as possible. Considering the reviews on various online publications, suffice it to say he’s doing an excellent job. Vineyard View Inn is also a stone’s throw from some terrific wineries and restaurants. Using this beautiful location as a home base seems like a prudent thing to do when visiting Newberg. The Inn is romantic and very affordable for everything you get to enjoy here. And, if you get a chance to visit for the holidays…VVI will be DECKED out in fun decorations — thus making your experience even more cheerful.
