San Francisco has gotten a bit of a bad rap through the media in recent years. While the city has dealt with some issues, there’s not one major city in the United States not having some unsavory elements. Let’s focus on the positive — which is the fact this city is not only strikingly beautiful, but it’s one of the most European in nature. SF is very walkable, and as such you can cover a ton of ground in a short amount of time. Here are a few locations worth checking out while in the Bay Area.
Hayes Valley
Hayes Valley is a lovely little pocket closely located near Alamo Square (aka where The Full House row of homes is). Clean and functional, this neighborhood has everything you’d want as both a resident and as a tourist. There are fun restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops. There’s plenty of space to sit outside and enjoy the weather. It might not be among the most talked about parts of the city, though it’s certainly one of the nicer ones. Suppenküche in particular is a terrific restaurant comprised of some authentic German cuisine.
The Mission
The Mission District is an eclectic and fascinating part of the city. It’s a bit gritty, but that adds to the charm of what makes it worthwhile as a spot to visit. You will get some of the best Mexican food in the United States here. Little taquerias are dotted throughout the neighborhood. Be sure to partake in the delicious offerings of burritos and moles as well. The street art scene here is phenomenal. There are murals all over the place — whether on the sides of buildings or overhangs. Bi-Rite Creamery is an iconic ice cream spot right smack dab in the action. Once you grab your ice cream, go find a spot of grass at Dolores Park to people watch from. You will encounter folks from all walks of life, and it certainly is a colorful place to hang out!
Fisherman’s Wharf
Fisherman’s Wharf is one of the more touristy areas within the city. At the same time, it’s worth checking out. You will be sure to get a bread bowl on the wharf with some sort of yummy soup (most likely clam chowder). The views from the wharf looking out at the ocean are beautiful. Aside from the shops and restaurants, this is also the starting location for the ferry going to Alcatraz. If you’ve got the time, take the tour at Alcatraz. You will be pleasantly surprised at how informative and fascinating the experience is.
North Beach
North Beach is a gem within the city. It’s long been known as the city’s Little Italy — and for good reason. The Italian food here is among the best on the West Coast (hello cioppino!). Throughout the year, there are festivals and street events which draw many people. It’s also a diverse neighborhood, and one worth checking out if you’ve never been here before.
