The Brazilian city of São Paulo is the biggest in South America. A cosmopolitan city with much in the way of diversity, Sampa has developed into a tourist attraction for those all across the globe who also visit the “more famous” city of Rio de Janeiro. We use the term “more famous” in quotes because while Rio may be more prevalent in pop culture, São Paulo is no slouch as a wonderful vacation destination. Here are five areas for you to check out within the city.
Pacaembu Stadium
This particular activity is a major treat for sports fans — particularly those who love soccer. This stadium was first constructed in 1938. Over the years, a plethora of high-profile matches have been played here. The setting is stunning, as the skyline of Sampa hangs in the background of the stadium. Today, people travel here to enjoy a soccer museum that sits inside. You’ll get beautiful views of the city itself while also learning a whole lot about why Brazil is such a soccer-crazed country.
Mercado Municipal
When venturing into a new place, the first stop many people make is to the city’s local market. Here in Sampa, Mercado Municipal is the premier spot to try out local foods. This includes fruit from the Amazon region which is practically absent anywhere else on the planet. You’ll see things here that you’ve literally never seen or tasted before. However, the headliner at the market is none other than the Mortadella sandwich. Influenced by immigrants from Italy, this sandwich makes the pastrami sandwich at Katz’s Deli in New York look like finger food. To put it mildly, this sandwich is LOADED with meat on soft white bread with melted cheese. Grab one of these at Bar do Mane in the market, and you’ll be very happy.
Vila Madalena
Vila Madalena is a fun area to go out and enjoy in the evening. It’s essentially a wealthy area chock-full of bars, restaurants, music venues, and everything one could want to experience in a party situation. It’s also among the safer parts of the city which is a nice benefit for tourists. The adjacent Pinheiros neighborhood is also worth checking out if you’re in the mood for people-watching, a beer, and some salty snacks.
Parque Ibirapuera
With São Paulo being such a major city, it only makes sense that there would be a significant park within the city limits. Parque Ibirapuera is akin to Central Park in New York City. This expansive piece of land sits right within the city. It’s lushly green with walking/bike paths, statue monuments, small museums, and everything in between. There’s even a pretty lake sitting within the park looking out towards the skyline. You could spend a nice chunk of time here taking in the beauty and tranquility of the park. However, we recommend doing so during the day and not at night.
Beco do Batman
This is one of the coolest stretches of streets in the city. If you look around the entire country of Brazil, street art and, by proxy, graffiti, is practically everywhere. However, Beco do Batman (Batman’s Alley) showcases some of the more brilliant murals you’ll find in the world. In Vila Madalena itself, this stretch of streets is highly colorful, thought-provoking, and among the best picture opportunities in the city. Visiting here during the day is more than worth it.
